Qi (energy) flows through meridians (channels) throughout the body, nourishing and moistening the body's tissue (organs, skin, muscles, etc.) while maintaining a healthful constitution.
At times the flow of energy is obstructed and disease may result.
Qi may become blocked in the channels due to injury, stress and strain, external pathogens, to name a few causes. The flow of Qi may be stimulated through acupuncture; that is the insertion of very thin needles in specific points along the meridians.
The acupuncture needles unblock the flow of energy and restore the free flow of Qi and along with it, the healthy flow of blood to the area of concern.
From a western medical perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system releasing chemicals into the body.
These chemicals may change the perceived experience of pain, or trigger the release of specific hormones which encourage the body's innate mechanism to maintain homeostasis.
By improving the body's biochemical balance, acupuncture promotes physical and emotional health.
